I’ll be honest, I don’t have a lot to offer here this week. It’s been a hurricane of hard things things, none of which are mine to share about and my overall feeling in this moment is: LESS PLEASE.
Less hard.
Less heavy.
Less illness.
Less loss.
Less pain.
When life is a lot, there’s the matter of making it through to the other side and I’ve been thinking about that lately. Thinking about how you do that exactly. And I realized that, for me anyways, getting through what’s hard is also how I make the lighter seasons and the beautiful moments feel even better, richer and juicier.
It’s so simple it’s annoying. It’s pausing. Noticing. Sinking into beautiful moments, if only for an extra second. It is embracing the ordinary. It is relishing in warm sunbeams during the cold winter months. It is savouring your morning coffee. It is sinking into clean sheets after a long day. It’s finding the ordinary to be, in fact, quite extraordinary indeed.
“Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.”- Poem by: William Martin
