015: the part of you that is least expected is more respected.
yes, I'm going to talk about horseback riding. again.
"Broaden your interests. It's nice to have at least one surprising hobby or passion. People find it interesting. In many ways, the part of you that is least expected is more respected." - James Clear
This quote landed in my inbox yesterday morning. It really struck me because the day prior I had a exploratory conversation with someone interested in working with me. We had a really interesting, dynamic conversation about his project and are going to see if there’s a way to work together as he heads towards launching it. The best part of the conversation was unexpected and happened at the very end. He asked me what I’m feeling really passionate about right now.
Pausing for a moment: If I’m being totally honest, I hate this type of question coming at me out of the blue. I generally clam up, I give some trite answer that doesn’t feel good for me to say or for anyone to hear.
The answer I blurted out was: horseback riding. I went on to explain that I’d always wanted to ride but never had the chance as a kid so I’ve taken it up recently and the act of learning something completely new in your 30’s is a total trip. For me, riding a horse is of course about the physical and mental work, but it’s also spiritual and emotional. It’s presence with another being far more powerful than you; an exercise in trust. Yesterday after my ride I cried my eyes out the whole way home, the beginning of releasing some long-held shit that’s been impacting me. And then to find that quote up there ⤴️ in my inbox? I love it.
If you’ve been wanting to explore something new - something surprising - this is your sign to do it 🫶🏼
Instead of my usual weekly list of things I’ve loved, I’m going to leave you with just one. My Internet friend Lizzie posted this the other day and well, I’m just gonna let it speak for itself: WHAT TO DO IF YOU’RE FEELING BLOCKED.
